I have recently had a DIY accident which resulted in losing half of my left thumb. This was very traumatic and painful as you can imagine and I struggled recovering from both in the days and weeks following the accident.
I have never been very good with ‘denial’ and wanted to deal with the emotional trauma (which was keeping me awake with pictures of the accident, how it happened and what I should have done to prevent it) immediately, armed with my training in emotional logic and with the help of one of my emotional logic coach colleague.
They pointed out to me though that 2 days after the accident and amputation that followed, I should be concentrating my energy on my physical recovery and coping with the physical pain first and put the emotional trauma in denial. So I did and proceeded to spend the following 2 weeks, resting, giving myself a break and watching Downton Abbey from beginning to end. After 2 weeks, once the pain had subsided a little I was then able to revisit the mental trauma and apply visualisation and breathing exercises and butterfly hug exercise until I could think of the accident without panicking.
I am happy to say that, 6 weeks on, I am now able to sleep, talk about the accident and be in the vicinity of the power tool that caused the accident without triggering a trauma response.
